Saving energy and growing cannabis don’t go together? Not true! If you’ve been lighting your grow box with traditional HPS or MH lamps, it’s time to switch to LED grow lights. This will further reduce your energy consumption without compromising on maximizing your yield. Find professional LED lighting at Cannvisa – your next grow is ready to go.
To grow cannabis quickly, develop strong roots, and produce thick, tasty buds by the end of the cycle, your plants need one thing above all else: light, light, and more light. Traditionally, this has led to extremely high electricity bills, but thankfully, technology has improved so much in recent years that there are now truly excellent LED grow lights on the market. At Cannvisa, we’ve curated the best options for you – find the perfect LED light(s) for your grow box. Whether for the flowering phase, the vegetative stage, or both, we have something for every need – yours and your plants’.
The number one advantage of LED grow lights: lower financial costs. While they are slightly more expensive upfront, studies have shown they consume 30–50% less energy than HPS or MH lamps. This makes them undeniably cost-efficient, especially if you grow plants continuously. Plus, most LEDs are dimmable.
In addition to lower energy consumption, LEDs also produce significantly less heat. This further reduces the operating costs of your grow box since cooling devices are no longer necessary. Not only does this benefit your electricity bill, but your plants will love it too: they can grow closer to the light source without suffering from burn damage.
With extremely even light distribution, LED grow lights provide uniform lighting to all parts of your plant. This is due to their design: the individual diodes emit light with equal intensity in a very small radius. Arranged regularly, these diodes ensure consistent illumination without hot spots or dark areas.
Cannabis requires different types of light during its life stages. From short-wavelength, bluish light in the vegetative stage to reddish light with wavelengths between 620 and 750 nm during flowering, you as a grower must ensure your plants have access to light within these spectra. The good news: LED grow lights cover the entire required spectrum of light! This means you don’t need to invest in multiple lamps – a single LED grow light can support your plants throughout the entire grow cycle. Many LED grow lights can also be daisy-chained, allowing you to connect multiple lights of the same type and control them with a single controller, like the LED controller from Lumatek.
Additional tip: If you have a separate propagation station for your seedlings or need a specific lamp for this purpose, we offer a full-spectrum LED light for propagation in our shop.
This question cannot be answered in one sentence. The light intensity your plants need varies depending on their life stage:
| needed lightintensity | |
Seedling |
100 - 300 µmol/m²/s |
|
Vegetative |
300 - 600 µmol/m²/s |
|
Flowering |
600 - 1000 µmol/m²/s |
|
You should choose a lamp that can deliver at least 1000 µmol/m²/s and ideally be dimmed to 300 µmol/m²/s. If you think you’ll need different lamps for this, consider adding a dimmer – such as the stepless mini-dimmer from HortiOne. This allows you to cover all life stages of your cannabis plants with a single LED grow light.
Depending on your grow tent's size and the light output of your LED grow light, you can calculate how many lights you’ll need. Start by noting:
Total PPFD = 1000 µmol/m²/s × area in m²
You’ll now have a value in µmol/s, which is the total amount of light needed to illuminate your grow room with 1000 µmol/m²/s. You could buy a single lamp capable of producing this amount of light. If you opt for multiple lamps, you can calculate the required number based on this value:
Number of lamps = required light output in µmol/s ÷ light output of a single lamp in µmol/s
If you haven’t purchased an LED grow light yet, this simple calculation will help you determine if one lamp is sufficient or if you’ll need additional lights during the flowering phase – and how many.
